Overview
The 2021 Toyota 4Runner is one of the most rugged mid-size SUVs on the market, but also one of the oldest and least refined. While its sturdy body-on-frame construction and off-road-oriented options make it seriously capable when the road ends and bolster its outdoorsy image, its plasticky interior and inefficient V-6 engine are notable flaws. Toyota has modernized this ancient four-wheeler with an impressive amount of standard driver assists and infotainment features. The 4Runner also has generous cargo space, and its roomy cabin can be outfitted with a small third row. Clumsy on-road driving behavior and a lofty price tag make the 2021 4Runner less desirable than most other popular competitors, but it remains a worthy alternative to the Jeep Wrangler—another vehicle in which off-road chops take precedence over everyday refinement.

Pricing and Which One to Buy
Toyota hasn’t released pricing for the 2022 4Runner, but that’ll likely be announced before it goes on sale at the end of this summer. Since we expect only a minor increase in how much each trim will cost, we can still recommend the TRD Off-Road model. It’s not as capable off-road as the lifted TRD Pro, but its significantly lower price tag makes it a better value. Along with standard four-wheel drive and some TRD-specific exterior and interior bits, the TRD Off-Road gets equipment that helps justify its name. This includes an electronically locking rear differential for maximum traction in slippery or muddy conditions. It also has selectable drive modes (called Multi Terrain Select and Crawl Control) that can alter the SUV’s powertrain behavior to accommodate various driving scenarios. We’d select the optional Kinetic Dynamic Suspension, which allows improved wheel articulation during off-road action. We’d also opt for the sliding rear cargo deck, which makes moving heavy cargo easier and even provides tailgate seating.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The interior of the 4Runner is not what you’d call state-of-the-art, with switchgear that could have come from the latter years of the last millennium. Lackluster materials and styling aside, it manages to comfortably fit humans front and rear in spite of its back-of-the-class interior measurements. We haven’t tested the optional third row, but we suspect that it’s best for children. A flexible cargo area and several large, deep cubbies in the front row mean that the 4Runner is as versatile a hauler as it is a rock-crawler. Just don’t try to heave anything into the cargo hold unless you have a chiropractor on call—its floor is uncomfortably high off the ground. The two-row models that we tested had an optional pull-out cargo deck designed to make loading and unloading heavy items—up to 440 pounds—a little easier. It can also double as a tailgate for seating. This provides a flat load floor when the second-row seats are folded, but also robs the cargo hold of several inches of height. Even so, we fit an impressive 14 carry-ons behind the second row.

Это старейший выпускаемый фирмой автомобиль такого типа, дебютировавший в продажах еще в 1951 году. Как и 4Runner, он имеет 5 дверей и рассчитан на 5 либо 7 пассажиров.
Существуют модели с бензиновым и дизельным вариантами двигателя. У старых машин, производившихся в 90-е годы и ранее, использовался также турбодизель. Двигатель, работающий на бензине, у этого внедорожника еще мощнее, чем у 4Runner (309 л. с.). Но у него высокий расход топлива – 12-15 л при загородной езде и около 20 л при городской.
Также в качестве конкурентов можно обозначить Nissan Patrol и Land Rover Defender. Оба они до недавнего времени продавались в России. Если первый автомобиль (также японской фирмы) является ближайшим конкурентом внедорожников «Тойоты», то модель повышенной проходимости от британского производителя имеет ряд отличий как по экстерьеру, так и по техническим характеристикам. Defender имеет механическую коробку передач с 6 ступенями, а пришедшая ему на смену модификация L663 – автоматическую на 8 ступеней.
What’s New for 2021?
The latest 4Runner adds a new limited-production Trail Edition for 2021. Toyota says it will only build 4000 copies, which are based on the base SR5 model and come with rear- or four-wheel drive. The Trail Edition is equipped with 17-inch dark gray TRD wheels and black exterior badges. Inside, it has black seats with tan stitching and all-weather floor mats. The 2021 4Runner also receives newly standard LED headlights, and the TRD Pro model gets a couple of unique upgrades: a new Lunar Rock exterior color, newly designed black TRD wheels wrapped in Nitto Terra Grappler tires, and retuned dampers that Toyota says are intended to improve isolation during trail driving.

Дизайн салона
Внутри салон отделан качественными материалами. В нем нечетное число кресел (5 или 7, в зависимости от модификации). Реализованы способы повышения комфорта пассажира – подогрев и регулировка сидений.
Расположенное по соседству пассажирское можно двигать только вперед-назад, а также менять у него угол спинки (последнее распространяется и на задний диван). Из-за этого очень высокие люди могут испытывать некоторый дискомфорт.
Тойота 4Runner 2019 оборудована консолью управления с некрупным экраном и большим числом клавиш и иных компонентов, посредством которых реализуется настройка разных опций. Диагональ дисплея – 6,1 дюйма. USB-гнездо всего одно. Кнопки на руле и медиасистеме отличаются крупными размерами. Присутствуют емкости для мелкоразмерных предметов и прикуриватель. Во внутренней отделке используется черная искусственная кожа либо обшивка тканью.
В тоннельной части размещены ручки, клавиши, позволяющие управлять ездой, а также утилитарные приспособления, обеспечивающие комфорт:
- рукоятки сниженной передачи и стояночного тормоза;
- кнопки, настраивающие шасси;
- селектор коробки передач;
- подлокотник;
- углубление для стакана;
- ящичек для мелких вещей.

Багажное отделение невелико: его полный объем составляет 255 л. Перевозить большее количество груза можно, если сложить спинки пассажирских кресел. На крыше автомобиля монтируется дополнительное приспособление для клади.
Комплектации и цены Тойота Форанер 2019 в новом кузове
Минимальные цены на автомобиль Тойота 4Runner 2019 находятся в диапазоне 35-47 тысяч долларов. Представленные комплектации находятся в разных частях этого интервала. Ниже всего стоимость у базовой модификации – SR5. Она снабжена медиасистемой Entune Audio Plus, блоками круиз-контроля и навигации, опцией подключения к Bluetooth. Кресло водителя имеет 8 режимов настройки.
Несколько выше цена у вариаций Тойота 4 Раннер 2019 TRD и TRD Premium. Задний дифференциал у них снабжен блокировкой, а полноприводная система устойчива к воздействию влаги. Еще одна особенность этих модификаций – обшитые тканью кресла. При перемещении по бездорожью можно подключить специальный блок помощи водителю.
Самая дорогая модификация в линейке – TRD Pro. Она снабжена богатым по функционалу навигационным блоком и медиасистемой с 15 динамиками. Используется и подвеска типа Fox.
Выпускается также комплектация Limited (цена ниже, чем у TRD Pro, но выше, чем у остальных вариантов). Существуют два ее варианта – обычный и Nightshade Edition. Последний отличается доминированием черного цвета в экстерьере и внутренней отделке. Эти автомобили снабжены легкими колесами с большим, чем у остальных модификаций, диаметром (20 дюймов вместо 17), а также подвеской X-Reas.
Двухзонный климат-контроль позволяет установить разные температурные условия для водителя и сидящего на переднем кресле пассажира. Крыша снабжена люком, а сиденья обшиты черной кожей. Есть 5 розеток на 12 вольт – по одной на панели медиасистемы, в багажнике (там же есть гнездо на 110 В) и в подлокотнике, еще 2 между передним и задним рядами кресел. Опция автоматического подъема задней крышки отсутствует.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The interior of the 4Runner is not what you’d call state-of-the-art, with switchgear that could have come from the latter years of the last millennium. Lackluster materials and styling aside, it manages to comfortably fit humans front and rear in spite of its back-of-the-class interior measurements. We haven’t tested the optional third row, but we suspect that it’s best for children. A flexible cargo area and several large, deep cubbies in the front row mean that the 4Runner is as versatile a hauler as it is a rock-crawler. Just don’t try to heave anything into the cargo hold unless you have a chiropractor on call—its floor is uncomfortably high off the ground. The two-row models that we tested had an optional pull-out cargo deck designed to make loading and unloading heavy items—up to 440 pounds—a little easier. It can also double as a tailgate for seating. This provides a flat load floor when the second-row seats are folded, but also robs the cargo hold of several inches of height. Even so, we fit an impressive 14 carry-ons behind the second row.
